Talented stylists etched or stamped the barcodes onto the scalps of high school and college students who participated eagerly as ‘hope agents.’ When these codes were scanned, supporters were able to donate $5 by text message or credit card to help improve living standards for children around the world.

• FBI to use Twitter to predict crimes – Telegraph – The FBI is trying to develop software that will scan Twitter and Facebook to look for ‘emerging threats’.
• The phone number is dead: Long live the social media profile! – older generations grew up with landline telephones, paper phone books and the need to remember a host of 10 and 11 digit telephone numbers. Mobile phones changed everything, storing the details of everybody you know for calls at the touch of a button, but the next step could be to ditch phone numbers altogether.

Once logged into the Plink program via their Facebook account and securely registering a credit or debit card, users earn Facebook Credits whenever a registered payment card is used at a participating restaurant. This seamless loyalty program rewards users automatically and doesn’t require any loyalty cards, additional steps or training in restaurants.

• If you’ve ever made a New Year’s resolution and broken it straight away, try Antiresolution – Making resolutions for the new year is common, and breaking them is nearly as common. According to the company MeYou Health, 88 percent of those who make New Year's resolutions fail to keep them. To break the cycle, MeYou Health has launched a free “Anti-Resolution” app that encourages users to forgo the big resolution and instead commit to a small daily action. The company argues that small actions, done over time consistently, will add up to the big result people want.

Love KLM! – KLM recently announced a new pilot program, to take effect next year, which will allow passengers to select their seats based on the Facebook and LinkedIn profiles of other flight passengers. The opt-in system will invite travelers to link their profiles to their check-in information; as such, the service will depend on passengers making this information publicly accessible for other passengers – be they friends, co-workers, potential dates or networkers to court them on the flight.
