How do you watch TV: on-demand or live?

Last week I posted the BBC’s latest iPlayer monthly viewing data which got me thinking about how much I use the service to ‘catch up’ on missed programmes.
I must admit that I am a huge fan of iPlayer and my support continues to grow daily as new bells and whistles are added. However I mainly uses iPlayer to catch up on BBC’s archived radio shows and tend to only watch TV shows online on a handful of occasions.*
The user experience is brilliant and I love the fact that I can …

UrbanKite – the best location based mobile search app around

Going through my email archive today I came across an email from an old pal Neil Pepper. Now those of you who work in mobile may know Neil as one of the amazingly talented developers behind ShoZu – the social media mobile hub which has recently been in the news amid rumours of acquisition.
I’ve known Neil ever since I had the pleasure of launching ShoZu to a consumer market back in 2006. We even made it out to Barcelona shortly after ShoZu’s launch and bagged the company the Best …

I’ve been a huge user of the guardian’s mobile portal m.guardian.co.uk for a few years now and have always been impressed with the way I could easily navigate around the site on whichever mobile I use as the platform is designed to adapt to each phone’s capabilities.
The Guardian iPhone app which was launched this week, is specifically designed to take advantage of advanced iPhone features, and includes extra features, such as offline browsing. I downloaded it today and have found that it’s a really easy way to access the Guardian’s …

Do you use mobile search? I do. Probably not as much as I should though. Even Google’s voice search can be cumbersome at times… but still, I’ve been helped out of a few situations by tapping out a search query on my iPhone.
The world’s fave search engine made huge steps today to stake its claim for the domination of the mobile search market by announcing the launch of its latest product: Google Goggles*.

BBC iPlayer audience data released

The BBC’s Head of Audience Measurement (HAM?) Jo Hamilton has written a post on the BBC Internet Blog explaining the corporation’s move towards sharing data on iPlayer usage.
The numbers give new insights into how people use the service, who they are and which programmes are most popular.
The data is quite rich and shows us how many people watched via live simulcast versus on demand and even how many people watch iPlayer on each platform – PC, mobile or games console.
What the data shows is as many men as women use …

Bangladeshis rush to learn English through mobile phones thanks to BBC World Service

In a wonderfully ambitious new project, BBC World Service Trust is attempting to harness the power and pervasiveness of mobile phones to provide English language lessons for the 50+ million mobile users in Bangladesh. This first-of-its-kind effort marks the first time that mobile phones have been used as an educational tool on this scale.
The project plans to offer English learning tools via the mobile phone, television, and Internet with BBC making Audio and SMS lessons available through its BBC Janala portal (‘Window’), which transforms a mobile phone into an …
