Commoncraft (the people behind the Plain English series) launched its latest release on its website today: Protecting Reputation Online. Aimed at young or inexperienced web users, this video explains the long term risks of sharing inappropriate information online.

According to the website:

[the video] encourages viewers to “think before you click” and offers tips for being responsible with photos, video and stories. Points include:

• Why photos are permanent on the web
• Future consequences of sharing inappropriate info
• Tips for protecting reputations (personal and friends)
• What to do when inappropriate info is shared

I’ve always really enjoyed Commoncraft’s Plain English approach to demystifying the web and have used the clips in front of clients and whilst speaking at a few seminars over the past few years. The clips never fail to illuminate the light-bulbs above the heads of even the biggest Luddites, making my job all the easier.

However, Commoncraft needs to earn its crust which is why I’m unable to embed the clip directly into this post. To do so would set me back a minimum of $75 a month which is something that I’m not prepared to pay for at this stage. The individual license costs $20 and is something that I will look into for use in future training scenarios but the terms of the license would prevent me from embedding the video into this blog.

Hwever, as with most of the videos, I’m sure it will resurface on YouTube in the months to come. In the meantime, click the image below to access the video on Commoncraft’s website. You’re in for a treat.
