Walking backwards in Times Square: Wonderland
Happy New Year folks! As we enter a new decade we emerge from the Noughties with a sense of optimism which dictates that we should all be moving together in the same direction. For the sake of the economy. For the sake of the environment which surrounds us. For political nirvana. For the future of our planet itself.
‘Wonderland’ is a video created by digital media artist Hye Yeon Nam. She is best known for her work in kinetic sculpture, audio and video.
Her recent submission to the Metropolis Art Prize 2009 which secured her the Runner-Up in the Grand Prize category has surfaced online, showing her walking backwards in New York’s Times Square.
Writing on her Babelgum page, Hye explains her idea in more detail:
“In my video piece, I attempt to convey the feeling of displacement and conformity by acting of walking. I perform walking forward and other people seem to be walking backward. However, I was walking backward in the real scene and I made it simply reversed. The space of being neither here following correct rule nor there following incorrect rule is precisely what I try to convey in this video”
The end product is mesmerising and ever so slightly eerie. Watch out for some of the passers-by and their reaction to the whole piece.
