How to sell social media marketing as a concept in two minutes

7 December 2009 809 views 2 Comments

I often get asked whenever I run training sessions on social media where to go to read-up on social media marketing. My first response is always to go and buy a copy of David Meerman Scott’s The New Rules of Marketing and PR. The ‘rules’ that David sets out in the book and continues to tweak on his popular blog still ring true today, nearly three years after they were first published.

This keynote presentation and Q&A session delivered by David Meerman Scott at the Business Marketing Association 2009 national “Unlearn” conference on June 10, 2009 in Chicago. Since the BMA is a business-to-business organisation, Scott’s keynote is tailored to a B2B audience. Scott argues that when others spread your ideas and tell your stories online, buyers are eager to do business with you and all kinds of doors begin to open.

David demonstrates a great way to pitch social media marketing to any client or colleague. Steve Seager, founder, strategy and content director at we do communications thinks the same:

“If you are looking for a 2-minute pitch to get buy in for social media as a valid business tool, for your potential client, or your own internal organisation, I don’t think you can do any better than the first 2 minutes of the rather brilliant David Meerman Scott’s video.”

    Hey Rax,

Wow! I’m flattered. Many thanks for writing about my stuff.

I’ve used those “5 questions” (the 2 minute opening of this video) with many skeptical audiences. It is amazing how transformational it is. Imagine a boardroom with a dozen people who firmly believe that their buyers are not online. And five minutes later they firmly agree that they are.

    David

You are clever, my little lamb. Good answers.

I just told a reader that Twitter is like sex, it’s better experienced than described, no?
