11,000 Good Mornings From Around the World

13 September 2009 602 views No Comment

If you know me, you’ll know that I’m obsessed with social media data visualizations. Why? Because they act as a collective barometer of the web’s (and therefore the world’s) mood.

My favourite to date is the wefeelfine project by Jonathan Harris and Sep Kamvar which never fails to blow me away.

Scrolling through my backlog of RSS feeds this weekend, PSFK drew my attention to the work of Jer Thorp of the blprnt blog who has designed a beautifully simplistic visualization model tapping into Twitter’s API. Jer managed to map around 11,000 tweets over a 24 hour period from all over the world which say “good morning” in some way.  The following video animation was made using Processing, Twitter4J and MataCarta’s geo-parsing APIs.
