Facebook adds SMS sign-up for branded Pages

With all of the recent changes that Facebook has made, it’s taken me a while to get my head around the finer intricacies of the branded experience.

Giving consumer brands a Facebook presence is something I’ve been doing for the past year and a half (Guinness, Marmite, Smirnoff, GOOD OIL, Liberation Nuts, Galler, Harvey Nichols, Bulleit, Phones 4U) with Splendid Communications so whenever Facebook changes its interface, I spend a far bit of time deciphering the implications the amends will have on the brand Pages.

Facebook Pages should be a staple online marketing decision for most consumer brands for all of the following reasons:

No media spend necessary (unless you invest in social ads)
Access to near real-time analytics and demographics (Facebook Insights)
Direct engagement with your consumers via Walls, Discussion Posts and commenting
Targeted updates to Fans (age, gender and region)
The ability to listen to your community – recommendations, complaints, suggestions, user experiences
A place to replicate existing content (RSS feeds, photos, videos)
A signpost to your official web presence

Today, as I was housekeeping one of my clients’ Pages I came across a new feature which really impressed me: The ability to allow consumers to subscribe to Facebook Pages via SMS.

The FB Help Pages don’t have any more info on this which leads me to suspect that it is only available for brands which have vanity urls (e.g. www.facebook.com/guinness). There were rumours earlier this month that the scope of vanity url eligibility was to be widened but so far, there has been no official response from Facebook. Currently only ‘partner’ brands (i.e. companies which commit to a considerable amount of advertising spend with Facebook) are entitled to a bespoke Facebook address.

What’s interesting is that brands can now use ATL marketing to push people to Facebook without relying on web proximity (i.e. the individual being near a computer or web enabled mobile handset). The call to action for consumers to subscribe to Pages via text is a smart move which could see closer integration of Facebook presence within ad campaigns. Currently, the “Search for us on Facebook” tagline on ATL displays doesn’t quite cut it with consumers as the delay between seeing an ad and signing up on Facebook is too long.

Facebook and SMS haven’t historically been as close as they should be but things now appear to be changing in a bid to align the platform closer to a Twitter-esque user interface:

I for one welcome SMS subscription to Pages on FB as it opens up new opportunities for brands to build communities around the concept of immediacy. For instance, at an outdoor festival – a micropage could be constructed for a brand which incentivised attendees to subscribe to the Page by entering them into competition: “The first 500 people to subscribe will recieve a free sample…”

Let me know if you see any interesting examples of this kind of SMS incentive… I’m always looking for new angles.
